Professional Development Opportunities

Summer 2014

Designing Numeracy Routines- High School

Back by popular demand, author and teacher educator Pam Weber Harris will lead participants through a variety of numeracy routines to support students to move from additive towards multiplicative thinking, and then from proportional reasoning towards algebraic thinking. Participants will first experience and study these routines up close, then design, review, and practice leading a sequence of routines for their own students. There will be short nightly readings/assignments to support our work together. Prior experience with number strings or numeracy routines is helpful, but not required.

DATES: June 30–July 2 (three-day session)
TIMES: 9:00 AM–4:00 PM (Doors open 8:30 AM)
LOCATION: City College (160 Convent Avenue, New York, NY 10031)

Patterns, Functions and Change – Middle School

This seminar will feature the following major components:
  • Exploration and analysis of the “big ideas” of middle grades mathematics including children’s mathematical thinking as they encounter these skills and concepts.
  • Alignment of the “big ideas” to the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS).
  • Analysis of mathematical and pedagogical practices, which are crucial to the successful implementation of CCLS.
  • Study of actual classroom practices through video and transcripts.
  • Math content highlighting patterns and number sequences leading to functions and functional relationships using tables, graphs expressions and models. Exploring the connections between constant and non-constant change and various types of functions; linear, quadratic and exponential. Interpreting and creating tables and graphs that are derived from data based phenomena of change over time.

Cluster 1/ISA Common Core Algebra PD Series

With the Common Core aligned Algebra exam and PARCC assessments on the horizon, teachers will have the opportunity to discuss, with fellow Algebra teachers and math coaches, how these assessments have impacted the way students learn and think about algebra in the classroom and how the teacher facilitates students’ understanding of algebraic concepts.  The first two sessions will focus on lesson and unit planning, and the last two sessions will focus on curriculum mapping and looking at the “big picture” of algebra.  Our collective goal is to ensure that teachers make progress towards preparing all of our students for Common Core aligned thinking and assessments (and to do some math together!).

The dates and locations for the four sessions are as follows:
Algebra Session #1 Lesson Planning-Thursday, October 31st, 9am-12pm, 335 Adams, Brooklyn, NY

QTEL PD Series

CFN 106 and CFN 107 will also be partnering with Quality Teaching of English Learners (QTEL).  This Mathematics centered PD will consist of 3 full day PD sessions in which we will be looking at the instructional shifts driven by the Common Core and what those shifts mean for our ELL students.  The Common Core asks students to make sense of problems and to write and talk about their problem solving processes.  These new standards pose stumbling blocks for English learners.  At this training, we will develop strategies for facing those problems head-on, so that students can take on these challenging tasks while simultaneously developing their language skills.  Participants in last year’s QTEL math series found it tremendously helpful.  .

The dates for this series are: November 21st, January 28th, and March 20th. Please find more details here
