Assessment
CFN 107 helps your school coordinate its yearly New York State testing as well as its periodic assessments.
The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires New York State to administer yearly tests aligned to state standards so that students, teachers, parents, and administrators can measure progress against shared expectations for student achievement. In addition to the State tests, the New York City Department of Education provides schools with Periodic Assessments in order to give regular, timely feedback on students' strengths and weaknesses to help guide instruction. Periodic Assessment results are not used to evaluate students.
Yearly State Testing
New York State students in grades 3−8 take State tests in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math each year. Students also take a science assessment in grades 5 and 8. NYS students in grades 9−12 take Regents exams in five subjects: English, mathematics, science, global history, and U.S. history and government. Students in New York City also take tests to apply for admission to selective schools and programs and to prepare for college.
In elementary and middle school, students’ test results are one of the factors that schools use to decide whether to promote a student to the next grade. In high school, students must pass five Regents Exams in order to graduate and may earn an advanced diploma if they pass more exams. Read more about the elementary and middle school promotion policies or high school graduation requirements.

Common Core State Standards/Performance-Based Assessment Pilots
The NYC DOE is engaging in several small pilots in the 2010-11 school year to help support schools and inform our work in transitioning to the Common Core State Standards. Each pilot will use the lens of the Common Core Standards and the higher college-and career-ready expectations of our students and educators when addressing the pilot’s specific area of focus. CFN 107 is proud to have the High School for Law and Public Service participate in this pilot. To see more about their work, please visit our Initiatives website.
